  Bruno Kreisky
Die Biografie

Wolfgang Petritsch

Whether as a politician, a visionary, a strategist, a diplomat or an orator, Bruno Kreisky was seldom short on surprises. Kreisky operated outside of the political mainstream while still managing to wield a long-term influence over it. And he set examples. His political agenda included themes that were not sufficiently anchored in the public consciousness. He foresaw international developments while actively devoting himself to the challenges of his era. Kreisky was less an administrator than he was a framer, a shaper. And he had an easy relationship with the artistic avant-garde.

To mark the occasion of Bruno Kreisky’s 100th birthday, Wolfgang Petritsch—whose period as one of Kreisky’s closest political associates provided him with unusually sharp insights into his thought and actions—published a comprehensive biography of this great politician.

BRUNO. Bruno Kreisky as portrayed by
Konrad Rufus Müller

MAK Works on Paper Room
23.1. – 29.7.2011
The MAK presents 49 photographic portraits of this legendary politician (22 January 1911–29 July 1990, Austrian Federal Chancellor from 1970 to 1983). The photographs, taken by portrait photographer Konrad Rufus Müller between 1980 and 1989, document Kreisky’s political and private lives from a close-up perspective. In doing so, “photographer-of-chancellors” Müller succeeded in capturing intimate moments of one of the era’s most outstanding personalities.

Five California Architects

Esther McCoy

Esther McCoy is a key figure in American modernism. Her writing gave visibility to the leading architects of West Coast modernism, and her prolific career was rooted in West Hollywood, primarily at the Schindler House.
This study of five Californian architects is an all-time classic. Bernard Maybeck, Irving Gill, the brothers Charles and Henry Greene, and R M Schindler, whose work and lives are presented here were seminal figures in American architecture. As Californians they were less influenced than their Eastern contemporaries by the European style that prevailed in the US during the first half of the 20th century, and each of them devised an original style that has had a profound effect on younger generations of American architects. This book has been acclaimed by many prominent architects and architectural historians who consider it to be an indispensable volume on 20th-century American Architecture.

Sympathetic Seeing: Esther McCoy and the Heart of American Modernist Architecture and Design
MAK Center Los Angeles
West Hollywood, CA
September 2011 – December 2011

This exhibition is the first to focus on the formidable range of architectural historian Esther McCoy’s practice and affirm her unassailable role as a key figure in American modernism. Author and co-curator Susan Morgan and MAK Center director Kimberli Meyer have collaborated in researching McCoy’s archives and selecting relevant visual documentation from major institutions nationwide. Morgan and artist Andrea Bowers will also collaborate to create a new artwork for the exhibition: a video project based on a script written by Esther McCoy and Silvia Richards, a Hollywood noir/Red Scare-era screenwriter. The script—about Los Angeles, architecture and juvenile delinquents—was the basis for the film Rebel Without a Cause by Nicholas Ray.

The Rothberg Family of Vienna

Series of the Commission for Provenance Research. Volume 2

This volume contains the history of the Rothberg family, which has helped shape the cultural and economic life of Vienna for almost a century. With its goods sold by the Warenhaus am Stephansplatz, the textile company was represented by one of Vienna’s premier retail outlets. The 1938 “Anschluss” between Austria and the German Empire brought a drastic change in the life of the Rothbergers. Persecuted as Jews, their textile company was “aryanised”, their collections forcibly sold off. Attempts after the end of the war to recover their assets were largely unsuccessful.

Restitution is of great importance to the MAK, also in relation to the museum’s own collecting past. Long before the Art Restitution Law passed in 1998, (“Return of art objects from the Austrian Federal Museums and Collections”), the MAK was active in this area, as notably demonstrated by the Mauerbach Symposium (1996), which represents the first comprehensive attempt to deal with the subject of art theft in Austria. The MAK exhibition “ReCollecting. Theft and Restitution” (2008/09), curated by Alexandra Reininghaus, firmly positioned the topics of provenance and restitution back in the spotlight. Tackling this issue is imperative – for only those who preserve memory may claim to defend humanity.

AAD Vienna
Art Architecture Design

In Vienna, it is not always easy for contemporary art, architecture and design to make itself seen amidst the historic backdrop of the city and its celebrated past. For the AAD Pocket Guide, Isabella Klausnitzer embarked upon a treasure hunt, drawing on numerous creative figures to help her compile a listing of the city’s hotspots and little-known gems, and the result proves: there is life after Sissi & Co.!
